Ingredients

Unlike a milkshake, this homemade blizzard recipe only uses two ingredients. It's the method of how you mix the ice cream and Oreos that gives it that iconic texture.

Oreo Blizzard Recipe (2)
  • Vanilla Ice Cream- Use your favorite brand of vanilla ice cream. We love use high quality brands like Tillamook for the creamiest texture.
  • Oreo Cookies- Traditional flavor is used for this recipe but you can also use any variety you love.

See recipe card for quantities.

How to make a Homemade Oreo Blizzard

Follow these step-by-step process photos to enjoy a copycat Dairy Queen blizzard at home. It's even better than Sonic milkshakes!

Oreo Blizzard Recipe (3)
  1. At least 10 minutes prior to making this treat, place the stand mixer bowl in the freezer. This helps regulate the temperature of the ice cream and stops it from melting quickly. If you don't have a bowl that will go in the freezer, you can still make the recipe.

2. Crush Oreo cookies into small pieces. Make sure to leave larger chunks, you don't want to turn the cookies into powder.

Oreo Blizzard Recipe (5)

3. Remove the bowl from the freezer and add the vanilla ice cream. Mix the ice cream in the stand mixer until a smooth texture.

Oreo Blizzard Recipe (6)

4. Add the crushed cookies to the smooth vanilla ice cream. Mix the ice cream and the cookie chunks together until well mixed. You don't need to blend the ice cream and cookies together like you would a milkshake.

Oreo Blizzard Recipe (7)

Pour the mixture into a cup and enjoy immediately.

Hint: DO NOT add milk to the ice cream! This will make the consistency too runny. You will loose that authentic blizzard texture you're looking for. By just using vanilla ice cream and Oreo cookies, you can get that perfect cup flip just like they do at Dairy Queen.

Substitutions

  • Gluten Free- make this a gluten free treat by using gluten free Oreos.
  • Dairy Free/Lactose Free- Use your favorite dairy free or lactose free vanilla ice cream to make this a blizzard fit for your diet preferences.
  • Golden Oreos - Use golden Oreos for a vanilla flavor.
  • Mint Oreos - Make it mint by using Mint Oreos instead of standard cookies.

Variations

  • Birthday Cake - Change up the vanilla ice cream with birthday cake ice cream for a birthday cake flavor.
  • Chocolate Explosion - Make this a double chocolate experience by using chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla ice cream.
  • Peanut Butter- Add a tablespoon of peanut butter when you mix in the cookies with the ice cream for a Peanut Butter Oreo Blizzard.
  • Cheesecake: Use either cheesecake ice cream, or add in cheesecake pieces.
  • Cookie Dough: Use Edible cookie dough bites or cookie dough ice cream instead of vanilla ice cream.

Helpful Hints

A stand mixer with a metal bowl will allow you to freeze the bowl for 10-30 minutes before making the recipe. This will keep the ice cream from melting too quickly and changing the texture of the recipe. If you don't have a stand mixer with a metal bowl, that's ok! You can still make a smooth textured ice cream creation.

I tried this recipe by using a large wooden spoon to slowly mix the ice cream. It took longer than a stand mixer but still gave a great texture. You want to try and avoid the blender.

Storing Homemade Blizzard Recipe

Freeze any uneaten ice cream in an air tight container. When ready to eat take out of the freezer and enjoy. The texture may be harder than normal so let it sit out for a couple minutes before enjoying.

Put this homemade ice cream treat to the famous flip test and you won't be disappointed.

Top tip

Don't use a blender when making this homemade treat. Use a stand mixer! It will turn into a milkshake if you use a blender and will not have the consistency you are looking for.

Freezing the bowl before mixing the ice cream and cookies together will help keep the ice cream from melting too quickly.

This DQ copycat recipe was just what I was looking for. It's so simple and I loved the frozen bowl technique. I never thought to make a blizzard in a stand mixer I always tried in the blender and the texture was never right!

I don’t have a stand mixer, nor can I afford one. Would this work using a electric mixer?

Yes! You can absolutely use a hand mixer. It may take a little longer and it may cause wear and tear on your motor though. To prevent this, let the ice cream soften for a few minutes before mixing. It will end up not quite as thick as a true blizzard this way.
